Katara noticed
something strange with Demigod. He was not right.
“We should
leave.” he said. Katara nodded. She flicked her blond hair behind
her shoulder and put out the fire.
“Where are we
going?” she asked.
“You are going
to the nearby village. Me and Rine going to Sanim Htirit.”
“Why does Rine
get to go?” she asked.
“She was in my
dream. I'm going to make something of my dream. Not just sit around.
You would be in danger.”
“Hey, you can't
decide its to dangerous!” she said indignantly.
“I have been in
peril and battle. I can't lead a woman into it.” he said.
“You won't lead
me into it. I'll come of my own accord.”
“I refuse to let
a adolescent girl go into battle. I will not allow it. I would
forsake my vows before I allowed you on the battlefield.”
Demigod shouldered
his leather satchel. Arryd came into the clearing. He soundlessly
stood next to Demigod and said:
“Good luck.”
“Though I barely
know you, I wouldn't want anyone other than you to come with me.”
said Demigod.
“Oh, so your
going to deny me a chance to do something and you ask him? Because
he's male?” Katara said, her tone rising.
“Arryd has no
doubt seen battle in his long life. He can fight.” said Demigod.
“So its up to if
we can fight?” asked Rine. She let her claws unsheathe.
“No. Its if you
could live through a fight, because if one of you was killed, I
blame myself for letting you fight.”
Katara saw a
different side of Demigod. He was actually much like herself in way.
He took responsibility for people. He also had a sense of duty and
adventure. She respected that. If she had a brother, she would want
it to be Demigod. Though would look strange as siblings. Her fair,
long, clean hair, and his black, greasy, short cropped hair. His
staunch athletic build, and her slim more elfin build.
He also seemed to
have a deep worldly, almost old intelligence to him. She just acted
like to teenage girl that she was.
“Follow if you
must, but there is no vow binding you.” Demigod said. He turned and
began walking into the forest. Rine reverted to all fours and trotted
to catch up. Katara and Arryd exchanged glances and set off after
them.
So ends the forming.
As
they exited the forest, Rine decided to look out to sea. She saw
that speck that Demigod had pointed out two days ago. It looked
taller. Not closer or larger, but it appeared to rise higher above
the horizon.
“Hey,
um, Demigod?” Rine said.
“Yes?”
Said Demigod. He thoroughly enjoyed Rine's company.
“Ya
know the tower thingy from your dream?”
“Yeah.”
“I
think its in the ocean.”
“I
have been contemplating that for a while. I saw it on my midnight
run.” He said.
“Are
we going to try and stop it?” Asked Rine.
“I
wish to find out more about it. I'd like to find someone who could
tell me if my dream has meaning or if it was just a restless mind.”
“So,
the dream could mean nothing, and my village could have burned down
because some jerk forgot to put out the fire?” Asked Rine
“Rine,
that is a possibility. How are you doing, seeing as you just lost
your entire life.”
“I
don't know. I guess I just haven't had chance to feel sad.”
“I
know the feeling.” said Demigod.
“Really?”
asked Rine.
“Yes.
I once had a sister, who I loved very much, but we became separated.
I don't know what has become of her, but I've been so busy my whole
life, I haven't felt the sadness that one who loses there family
should feel.” he said. Katara listened intently. She had the same
thing, just she had been taken into a nice family, and had been able
to grieve her loss.
She
thought about this. What where the chances.....? She pushed the
thought from her mind. She did not have time for false hope.
“So
um, Demigod? Could you bye any chance teach me and Rine to fight.”
she asked.
Demigod
sighed and said:
“I'd
rather not, but we may have need of it.”
“So
yes?” implored Katara hopefully.
“Yes,
I will instruct you in self defence.”
“Sweet!
Your the best, Demigod.” She said. A new spring came into her step.
The group continued along the cliffs, following them to the village
that Demigod had found Arryd in. Now that he remembered the way, he
could get there quite easily.
The
walk was pretty quiet. Other than the occasional conversation, they
walked in silence.
They
entered the town. Almost immediately, the two men who had taunted
Demigod when he had last been in the village approached them.
“Hey
there!” called one.
“Hey,
Fen, ain't this the cocky little brat who socked you the other day?”
asked the ugliest one to the largest, Fen.
Demigod
growled, his hand straying towards his sword hilt.
“Yeah,
I think it is, Rod.”
“Why
don't we teach this little booger a lesson?” asked Rod.
“Yeah!”
Fen grabbed Demigod by the shirt collar. Demigod punched him. Fen
released him, but Rod drove his fist into Demigod's abdomen. Demigod
gasped for air.
Arryd
jerked Demigod's sword free from its scabbard and clubbed Rod over
the head with it. Fen drew a long serrated edged knife, and pointed
it at Arryd.
By now,
Demigod had recovered. Arryd handed him back his sword. Demigod
advanced upon Fen.
Fen
backed up warily, the lunged! The knife came dangerously close to
Demigod's neck, but he dodged back. He caught the knife blade in his
hilt, and twisted it. The knife came loose and stuck in the ground.
Demigod levelled his sword at Fen's neck.
“Do
you have a problem?” asked Demigod. A harsh tone resonated in his
voice. He did not like angry, drunk men.
“Ummm....
Nope. No problem here!” said Fen, managing to sound both stupid and
hurried at the same time.
“Well
then stop standing around stupidly. Not that you don't do it well.”
Said Demigod. It took Fen a moment to digest that he was being
insulted.
Demigod
lowered his sword and replaced it to its scabbard. It made a
resounding metal ping, as if he were driving his point home.
Technically, he was.
Demigod
and Arryd turned to the girls, who had been watching the combat.
“Cooooool!”
breathed Katara.
“That
is not something to be in awe about. Just walk into a bar any day of
the week and you'll get the same thing.” said Arryd.
Katara
shrugged.
“So
what are we doing here anyways?” she asked.
“You
and Arryd will secure some supplies, while me and Rine try and find a
group to travel to Sanim Htirit with.”
“Why
do we need to travel with others?” enquired Rine.
“Safety
reasons. Your less likely to be attacked in a group than by yourself.
I doubt most villains would think twice before attacking a teenage
girl, a Furry, a elf, and a man.” replied Arryd.
He and
Katara then split off from Demigod and Rine. They went to a nearby
market and Arryd began to barter with stall owners.
Demigod
and Rine went to the tavern called the Blue Gryphon. Demigod
stopped outside the tavern and said to Rine:
“Rine....
did you know that you kind used to be enslaved?” Demigod asked
warily. Rine nodded.
“There
are still some men who practice the trade, though it was outlawed.
Most rich families have one or two Furry slaves.” Rine nodded
again.
“I
think it would be best if you stayed close. Do not talk or draw
attention to yourself. Most of these men will be drunk and boasting.
If they say something that does not agree with you, excuse it has
ravings of the drunk.”
Rine
nodded again. She pulled the hood of her cloak up over her head. They
entered the tavern.
Demigod
chose a seat at the bar, but did not order anything.
“Wha'
can I getcha?” asked the toothless barmaid.
“Just
water for me and perhaps some milk for my friend.” said Demigod in
hushed tone.
“Wees
don 'ave water er milk, fer that matter. Can I interes' yees in an
'lcholic beverage?” she asked.
“Some
have better habits then others, and we wouldn't want to end up
toothless and yellow tongued like you.” Demigod replied.
“Soot
yerself.” shrugged the barmaid.
“But
I would like to know of any caravans on there way to Sanim Htirit.”
said Demigod.
“Aye!”
grunted hooded figure, shrouded in a dark cloak. The figure had
slammed a large knife in front of Demigod.
“I'm
departin' fer Sanim Htirit as soon as the moon rises.” said the
figure.
“Indeed.
Is it a large caravan?” asked Demigod.
“Jus'
me, an a girl, headed for Myanam deltas.”
“We'll
journey with you. You can expect myself, a furry, a girl, and an
elf.”
“The
girl an' the elf buyin' supplies?” asked the figure.
“Yeah....
why?” asked Demigod.
“Well,
they got attacked by two local scoundrels. Clubbed the elf over the
head, and grabbed the girl.”
Demigod
left the bar.
He
moved with purpose down the street. He entered an alley. He was
baiting the two men who could not seem to leave him or his companions
alone.
He just
stood in the alley, with his back turned to the street. He heard the
sound of footsteps pretending to be quiet.
He spun
and pulled his sword from its scabbard.
“This
is Fandril.” he said to Fen. He raised the sword to let Fen and Rod
know that the sword was Fandril, not him.
Fen
drew his long serrated knife and Rod brandished a knobby stick.
“Fandril
likes to bite,” said Demigod “Fandril is hungry! Fandril wants to
know where Demigod friends are!” Said Demigod.
Fen
elbowed Rod.
“I
don't like Fandril! He's scary.” he said.
“Do
you think we should tell him that we put the elf and girl in the
waggon headed for Sanim Htirit?”
“I
don't know.... how about we beat the snot out of him and then
decide.”
“I
like that idea!” Rod exclaimed. Demigod rolled his eyes and lowered
his sword. Then in Demigod's moment of weakness, Fen and Rod
attacked.
Fen
advanced on Demigod and struck for the throat. Demigod dodged and
shoved Fandril's hilt into Fen's back. Fen went down, but recovered
and tried to slash at Demigod's legs.
Demigod
leaped, but his attention was taken away from the advancing Rod. A
dull pain resounded in his abdomen, as Rod's club found its mark.
Demigod
ducked beneath the swing of the club and rolled around Rod's legs. He
lashed his sword out and severed Rod's right Achilles tendon.
Rod
fell with a few special words and a scream.
Fen
regained his feet and threw his knife and Demigod. Demigod turned
just in time for it to slice across his forehead. A trickle of blood
blurred his vision, but he could see enough to slice open Fen's
stomach.
Demigod lowered his sword. Blood was spattered across the blade. He
returned Fandril to her scabbard.
Demigod
wiped blood from his eyes and left the alley. He then remembered that
he had left Rine in the bar.
